What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral made up of extremely small, strong fibres. Because asbestos fibres are resistant to heat, fire, chemicals and wear, asbestos was historically incorporated into a wide range of building materials and manufactured products.

In New Zealand, asbestos-containing materials can still be present in many existing homes, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and equipment. WorkSafe advises that buildings constructed before 1 January 2000 are likely to contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).

Asbestos may also be present in older manufactured products such as brake linings, filters and fire-resistant textiles.

Asbestos is not a risk if it is in good condition and left undisturbed.

The danger occurs when asbestos fibres are released into the air.

Where to find Asbestos Awareness training?

This course is based on the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 and WorkSafe NZ’s Approved Code of Practice for the Management and Removal of Asbestos.

It is designed for anyone who may come into contact with asbestos or asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) as part of their work.

The programme is delivered fully online, allowing you to learn at your own pace.

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a digital certificate, which comes with a recommended renewal period of two years.
