ACM vs PVC vs Decal: Which Signage Material Is Right for Your Site?

Choosing the right sign material comes down to exposure, mounting surface and how much rigidity you need. In simple terms, ACM is the best fit for outdoor or exposed signs, PVC is a lightweight option for indoor or sheltered signs, and a decal is useful when the label needs to be applied directly to a tank, asset or other suitable surface. Rifft Safety offers all three options across its signage range.

ACM, PVC or decal: the quick answer

  • ACM: a rigid, laminated 4 mm panel for outdoor or exposed locations, with a lifespan of up to seven years depending on conditions, installation and care.
  • PVC: a lightweight, unlaminated 1 mm sheet for indoor or sheltered locations. It is not ideal for outdoor or exposed areas because of its limited weather resistance.
  • Decal: an adhesive printed label for applying directly to a suitable surface, such as a tank or other asset. The right decal depends on the surface and the product’s intended application.

The material is only one part of a good signage choice. Content, size, placement, surface condition and ongoing visibility also matter, so check the individual product information and any site or regulatory requirements before ordering.

ACM: the outdoor and exposed-area option

ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) uses two thin aluminium sheets bonded to a core, creating a rigid and durable panel. For Rifft Safety’s ACM signage, the digital print is applied to 4 mm stock and then laminated. The laminate adds a protective layer that helps guard the print against UV rays, moisture and other elements.

That combination makes ACM a sensible starting point for signage that will face weather or regular outdoor exposure. The expected service life can be up to seven years, but actual performance depends on the installation environment, cleaning and damage from site activity.

Suitable ACM applications

  • Hazchem signage and other dangerous-goods identification signs.
  • Outdoor walls, fences, gates, yards, chemical stores and other exposed areas.
  • Site signs where a rigid panel and a more durable printed face are preferred.

For example, the Hazchem Sign – Class 3, 5.1, 6.1, 8, 9 is listed as a 4 mm ACM sign with UV-resistant inks and multiple size options. Rifft recommends a minimum size of 600 × 450 mm for that product, subject to the needs of the site and application.

PVC: lightweight for indoor or sheltered areas

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a lightweight plastic material. The digital print is applied to a 1 mm PVC sheet, with no lamination. PVC is best suited to indoor or sheltered locations. It is not ideal for outdoor or exposed areas because its weather resistance is more limited than the laminated ACM option.

PVC can be a practical choice when the sign is being used inside a factory, warehouse, workshop, office or covered area where a lightweight panel is all that is required.

Suitable PVC applications

  • Spill Kit Inside Factory Sign used indoors to show the location of spill-response equipment.
  • Signs that identify a particular room, work area, storage zone or piece of equipment.
  • Directional or location signage in sheltered corridors, workshops and warehouse areas.

If a supposedly sheltered location still receives direct sun, wind-driven rain, wash-down water or frequent abrasion, treat it as a more demanding environment and confirm whether ACM is more appropriate.

Decals: low-profile labels for tanks and assets

A decal is an adhesive printed label rather than a rigid panel. It is useful when the label needs to sit directly on a tank, vessel, vehicle or other suitable asset, or when a low-profile finish is preferred. The surface should be clean, smooth and compatible with the adhesive, and the product’s intended application should match the conditions where it will be installed.

For indoor location signage, Rifft’s Spill Kit Inside Factory Sign includes a decal option described as a digital-print laminate sticker for indoor use. For tank identification, the Hazchem – 3Z Tank Decal Stickers are a specific example made for tank labelling. That product is listed in multiple sizes and described as weather-resistant, so it should not be assumed that every decal is suitable for every exposed location.

Suitable decal applications

  • Tank stickers and asset labels that need to follow a curved or existing surface.
  • Hazchem tank identification such as the 3Z decal range, where the product specification matches the application.
  • Indoor labels where a low-profile adhesive sign is more practical than a rigid panel.

A simple signage-material checklist

  1. Check the exposure. Choose ACM for outdoor or exposed conditions, PVC for indoor or sheltered conditions, and a decal when the label needs to be applied directly to a suitable tank or asset.
  2. Check the mounting method. ACM and PVC are rigid panels that can be fixed in place. A decal needs a suitable, clean surface and careful application.
  3. Check the message and size. Hazard and dangerous-goods signs need to remain clear and visible for the people who rely on them. Follow the product information and any requirements that apply to your site.
  4. Plan for maintenance. Keep signs visible and legible, inspect them as part of site checks, and replace any sign that is damaged, peeling, faded or no longer suitable for the conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is ACM better than PVC for outdoor signage?

ACM is generally the more suitable choice for outdoor or exposed signage because the sign uses a rigid 4 mm panel with a laminated print. PVC is a 1 mm unlaminated sheet intended mainly for indoor or sheltered use.

Can PVC be used outside?

PVC may suit a genuinely sheltered location, but it is not ideal for outdoor or exposed areas. If the sign will receive regular UV, moisture or weather exposure, confirm whether an ACM option is the better fit.

What are decals best for?

Decals are best when a printed label needs to be applied directly to a suitable surface, including tanks and other assets. Rifft’s 3Z tank decal stickers are one example; for indoor location messages, a decal can also be useful where a low-profile label is preferred.

Choose the material for the environment

As a quick rule, choose ACM for outdoor or exposed signage, PVC for indoor or sheltered signs, and a decal for direct-to-surface tank or asset labelling where the product is specified for that use. If you are unsure which option fits your site, contact Rifft Safety with the sign message, dimensions, mounting surface and location so the application can be checked before you order.
